I had quite a bit of canoeing and portaging experience in Ontario before this trip,
but canoeing in the Everglades turned out to be nothing like good old Ontario.
Florida and the Everglades are a very different kind of beautiful; sandy
beaches, swamps, strange birds, and best of all dolphins. It was so amazing
to have dolphins swimming along as we paddled in the ocean and even in the swamps.
We had to bring in a ton of freshwater, which is something you don't have to worry
about in Ontario. But since there were no actual portages, we brought a lot of
good food. In fact we ended up cooking pasta on a gas stove right in the canoe, in
the middle of the ocean. In terms of difficulty this was an easy trip, but you have
to be very careful with the sun, because even in February the sun can be scorching
in Florida. This is definitely one of those once in a lifetime trips and I most
surely recommend it to all members.
